The room was unsealed in the following century and made into a historical landmark. The current residents report seeing the spirit of Therese de Saint Clar wandering through the hallways headed toward the little room in the North Tower where she died.

With its 900 years of history, complete with royalty and bloody battles, it’s no wonder Edinburgh Castle is said to be haunted. The city of Edinburgh is actually thought to be the most haunted city in Scotland and all of Europe.

Dating back to at least 600 AD, Edinburgh Castle has been a fortress and as a battleground. The grounds around the castle were the site of many wars between the Scots and the English and the area has been the location for thousands of deaths, including both soldiers and royalty.

A castle wouldn’t be a castle without dark, creepy dungeons, and Edinburgh Castle definitely has those. Edinburgh’s dungeons housed prisoners who were incarcerated, tortured and frequently perished. Of course, like many castles these dungeons are haunted by the ghosts of these prisoners.

Some of the reported hauntings include a phantom piper, a headless drummer, the spirits of French prisoners from the Seven Years War and colonial prisoners from the American Revolutionary War, as well as the ghost of a dog wandering in the dog cemetery located on the grounds.

When the tunnels were first discovered several hundred years ago, a piper was sent to explore them. As he navigated the tunnels he played his bagpipes so that his progress could be tracked by those above. About half way down the Royal Mile the piping suddenly stopped. When a rescue party was sent, there was no trace of the piper. He had simply vanished. Search parties went into the tunnel system but no evidence of the piper was ever found.

The piper’s ghost still haunts Edinburgh today, walking endlessly along the underground tunnel beneath the Royal Mile. His music can sometimes be heard from within the castle and on the streets above the tunnels.

Many people have reported hearing the sound of ghostly drums within Edinburgh castle. Very few people have seen the drummer, however, because the drummer ghost only appears when the castle is about to be attacked, and that hasn’t happend for a while. The ghost drummer was first seen before an attack on the castle in 1650 and is reported to take the form of a headless boy. Who the boy was and why he now haunts and protects Edinburgh castle is unknown.

In April of 2001, the castle and its grounds were were the subject of one of the largest scientific investigations of the paranormal ever conducted. Dr. Rich Weisman took a group of 240 volunteers who were unaware of the castle’s past on a walk through the castle and around the grounds to see what kind of paranormal activity they would come up with. The results were quite surprising. Nearly every volunteer reported experiencing something. The reported experiences included sudden drops in temperature, shadowy figures, feelings of being watched, an unseen presence touching the face, and the feeling of something tugging at clothes.

Ballygally Castle was built in 1625 as a defensible residence by a Scotsman named James Shaw. As is characteristic with many castles in Europe, Ballygally Castle is alleged to be haunted by traditional spirits. Located about 30 minutes north of Belfast, the castle sits on the Irish Sea, complete with a view of a lighthouse in the distance.

The castle allegedly plays host to a number of spirits. Over the years, many guests have reported peculiar experiences and have felt a presence in their rooms. There are also never-ending stories of unexplained noises in the night, and a weird green mist over the Castle.

Perhaps the most active being the previous resident, Lady Isobel Shaw. The man who nuilt the castle, Lord James Shaw, wanted a son, and when his other half delivered his heir, he took the baby from his wife and locked her in a room at the top of the castle. A couple of years later, Isabella Brisbane Shaw, either slid, jumped, or was pushed out of a tower window. Today, her ghost haunts the castle. According to reports, her ghost is friendly and entertains herself by knocking on doors and then vanishing.

The spirits of soldiers who died defending or attacking the castle have also been seen here. Many armed and in uniform. Another usually sighted ghost is Madame Nixon who lived in the hotel in the 19th century, who can be seen and heard walking around in her silk dress.

Fifty years ago BallyGally castle was expanded and turned into a hotel. Today guests can enjoy both ancient history and the presence of traditional spirits.

You can book a room at the hotel by visiting here.

The Kennedys, a well-known Scottish family, were the first inhabitants of the castle in 1759 and lived there for the next 800 years.

Visitors and staff have reported a ghostly piper playing on the grounds, especially before a kennedy family wedding and on stormy nights. There have also been reports of a beautifuldark haired girl in an evening gown who approaches people in an otherwise empty corridoor. One report actually says the witness felt a cold chill in his entire right side as she passed “through” him. No one seems to know who this mysterious lady is.

There are several other ghosts reported in or around the castle, including one who is thought to be the ghost of a princess who was killed in the Green Room whopresents herself as a “misty shape”, and the spirit of Sir John Cathcart who abducted May Kennedy and planned to kill her but luckily for May, she managed to push him off a cliff in the area and make her escape.

Calvados Castle was built in 1835, in Normandy France, directly on top of the ruins of an unidentified building. From October 12, 1875 to January 30, 1876, the inhabitants of Calvados Castle endured one of the most prolonged and terrifying occurances of poltergeist phenomena ever recorded.

That first night, things began flying around the rooms, rappings echoed through the walls, and thunderous booms were heard throughout the castle. The master and servants searched the castle but no one was found. These loud bangs on walls and door continued throughout the night almost every night for the next 3 months.

The family invited a Priest to come to the castle and spend the night. The priest recalled the next day that he had heard the heavy footsteps that sounded like a giant of a man descending the stairs in the early morning. He believed that events at the castle were of a supernatural nature and flet he was powerless to stop it. He wished the family the best of luck and left the castle in a hurry.

One night during a violent November rainstorm, the spirit let out a long shriek somewhere outside the castle. The witnesses all agreed that the wailing sounded like a woman calling for help. As they looked outside to see if someone was there, the shrieking began inside coming from inside the castle and seemed to be getting closer to the terrified family. The castle was searched, but again nothing was found.

The following night, just before midnight, the castle inhabitants were awakened by what seemed to be the sounds of a woman in horrible suffereing. The cries got worse as the days went by, until they eventually evolved into shrill, furious, despairing cries.

As the poltergeist activity continued to increase, the childrens’ beds were turned over, books, maps and papers were strewn everywhere, and the doors were pounded on so forcefully that every window in the building shook.

Finally, an exorcism was performed on January 26, 1876. A piercing cry was heard, sounding like that of a great beast that had been dealth its death blow. Rappings were heard everywhere and everyone heard a male voice shouting “Ha!Ha!”. Ten powerful blows rattled the door and shook everything. At last, after the final blow to the door, there was the sound of coughing. Then there was nothing.

There have been no reported incidents since.
